British Motor Corporation (BMC)

Encouraged by the government, the UK’s two largest companies, Austin and the Nuffield Group, merged in 1952, bringing together the Austin, Morris, Wolseley, Riley, Austin-Healey and MG brands to form the British Motors Corporation.

This new company held more than 50 percent of the UK market and was substantially larger than another European car company. Over the fifteen years, BMC kept its top sales position and expanded production.

Jaguar Cars joined BMC and the company on 14 December 1966, changed its name to British Motor Holdings Limited.

In 1968 The British Leyland Motor Corporation was formed from a merger of British Motor Holdings and the Leyland Motors Corporation.
