London Tower Bridge

In 1894, England’s Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII officially opened one of the world’s  most famous spans over one of the world’s most famous rivers – Tower Bridge on the Thames.

The hydraulically powered drawbridge was built to accommodate the growing East End. Built between 1886 and 1894 Tower Bridge was created because London Bridge had become too crowded.

The name Tower Bridge was first used in 1872 when a bill seeking authority to build it was introduced in Parliament.

Utilizing the bascule (seesaw) principle, it took eight years to build, with masonry cladding over a steel framework.

Tower Bridge becomes one of the world’s most celebrated landmarks and possibly the most photographed and painted bridge on earth.
